Bias: From prejudice to operating point

Outside the shop floor, bias means prejudice. In electronics, it means voltage or current deliberately applied to set an electronic device's working condition.

To most people, bias is a mental shortcut or unfair preference. A hiring manager shows bias. A witness gives biased testimony. The word carries moral weight; bias is something you try to correct or overcome.

In electronics, bias is a deliberate, essential input. A transistor or diode cannot work properly without it. An engineer applies a bias voltage or current to an electrode, such as the base of a bipolar junction transistor or the gate of a field-effect transistor. This bias shifts the device's operating point into the region of its transfer function where it will behave as needed, whether as an amplifier, a switch, or a detector. The bias can be steady (DC) or varying with signal (AC). It is not a flaw to remove but a tuning parameter to set.

The textile industry uses bias in a related but different way. Bias tape and bias binding are strips of fabric cut diagonally across the grain, or on the bias. Because the weave is cut at forty-five degrees to its length and width, the fabric stretches more easily and clings to curved edges. Garment makers use bias tape to finish necklines, armholes, and seams where straight-grain binding would pucker or break.

All three senses spring from the same root metaphor of slant or tilt. In old tailoring, to cut on the bias was to cut at an angle to the selvedge, slanting the fabric for flexibility. Prejudice slants the mind away from fairness. In electronics, a bias voltage tilts the device's characteristic curve, shifting where on the curve it will sit. The electrical meaning borrows the geometric one, and the moral meaning borrows the geometric one too, but they operate in opposite directions: textile bias and voltage bias are tuning adjustments that improve function, while mental bias is a distortion you must fight.
