Cookies

This site does not set advertising or tracking cookies, and it does not embed third party advertising or analytics scripts.

The only cookie the site may set is a strictly necessary one, used to keep a page working during your visit. Strictly necessary cookies do not require consent under the ePrivacy rules, because the site cannot function correctly without them.

Web fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to that service and it receives your IP address as part of that request. No cookie is set by the font request itself.

If you block cookies entirely, the dictionary still works. Search, browsing and every entry page are available without them.

Privacy

You can read this dictionary without giving us anything. There is no account, no login and no requirement to identify yourself.

What we collect

Standard web server logs, which include IP address, the page requested, the time, the referring page and your browser's user agent. These are used to keep the site running and to detect abuse.

If you send a message through the contact form, we store what you type along with the address you give us, so we can reply and so we can act on corrections. If you subscribe to the Word of the Day, we store your email address for that purpose alone.

What we do not do

We do not sell or rent personal information. We do not use your address for marketing you did not ask for, and we do not build advertising profiles.

Your choices

Every Word of the Day email carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes your address. You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by writing to the address on the contact page.

Retention

Server logs are kept for a limited operating period and then rotated out. Contact messages are kept while they are useful for corrections and then removed.

Terms of use

What this site is

Industrial Dictionary is a terminology reference. It records what words mean in industrial use.

What it is not

It is not an operating manual, a maintenance procedure, a design authority or a safety document. A definition explaining what a tool or a process does is not an instruction for performing that work, and must not be relied on as one.

Before operating, servicing, lifting, energising, cutting, entering or isolating equipment, use the manufacturer's current instructions, your site's approved procedure, and the laws and standards that apply in your jurisdiction.

Accuracy

Entries are checked and sourced, and industrial vocabulary still varies by region, employer and era. The content is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, and we accept no liability for loss arising from reliance on it.

Content licence

Entry text is adapted from English Wiktionary and is available under CC BY-SA 4.0. If you reuse it, follow the conditions set out on the licence page. The site design, editorial features and original writing are not covered by that licence.

Acceptable use

You are welcome to read, link to, quote and teach from this site. Automated access that degrades service for other people is not acceptable. The sitemap is published for indexing, and heavy bulk collection should use the licensed source data instead.
