Bond: From Trust to Brick Overlap
In everyday speech, a bond connects people or secures loans. On the building site, it is a pattern of overlapped bricks that holds walls together.
To most people, a bond is a promise or a tie. You bond with a friend through shared experience. A bond is also a certificate of debt, a financial obligation to repay borrowed money with interest. In both cases, the word carries a sense of obligation, connection, and mutual holding. Something is bound to something else because they are committed to stay together.
In construction, bond means something far more literal and material. A bond is the pattern in which bricks or stones are laid so that each unit overlaps the one below it. This overlap is the whole point. When a brick is placed with its long side (stretcher) facing out, it runs the length of the wall. When placed with its short end (header) facing out, it reaches across the thickness of the wall and locks bricks on both sides together. By alternating these orientations course by course, masons create a pattern that distributes load and prevents the wall from splitting vertically. English bond alternates full courses of headers with full courses of stretchers. Flemish bond mixes them within every course, one header and one stretcher, one header and one stretcher. The visible face looks different, but both achieve the same structural goal: no continuous vertical seams. Each course covers the joints below. Shear strength and compression resistance follow directly from this overlap.
The metaphor is old enough that the building sense may have fed back into the emotional and financial meanings, not the other way around. Overlapping holds things together; things that hold together are bonded. But in construction, bond is not a matter of trust or agreement. It is geometry and gravity. A wall can be bonded whether the bricks consent or not.
The term appears in other trades with similar logic. Bond timber is a wooden beam laid lengthwise into a masonry wall, crossing its thickness to tie the outer leaf to the inner, much as a header ties the front face to the back. In metallurgy, to bonderize steel is to coat it with phosphate, creating a chemical film that bonds primer and paint to the bare metal surface, improving adhesion. In electrical engineering, cross-bonding connects power cables by crossing return conductors between phases, allowing current to be distributed more evenly and losses reduced. Each use invokes the same principle: the bond is the mechanism of connection, the means by which separate things are made to work as one.
