Cell: from organism to network zone
In radio networks, a cell is a coverage zone and its equipment. In biology it is the unit of life, but industry borrowed the term for how wireless divides space.
To most people, a cell is the smallest unit of living matter. It is the closed compartment that holds a nucleus, cytoplasm and a membrane. Every plant and animal is made of cells. The word comes from the Latin cella, meaning a small room or chamber, because early microscopists saw cells as tiny enclosed spaces.
In radio systems and mobile networks, a cell means something structurally similar but functionally different. It is a geographic area served by a single base station or transmitter. All the users in that area, and all the equipment that serves them, form a working unit. The base station antenna broadcasts radio signals across the cell. Devices within it pick up the signal and connect to the network through that station. When you move to an adjacent cell, your device hands off to a different base station. The cells overlap slightly at their boundaries so service remains continuous.
The term spread to other domains in industrial equipment. A battery cell is a unit that stores chemical energy and converts it to electrical current through an anode, cathode and electrolyte. A fuel cell does something similar, converting fuel and oxidant directly into direct current through catalytic reaction. Both are self-contained electrochemical systems, just as a radio cell is a self-contained service zone. An air cell in an internal combustion engine is a small prechamber where fuel is injected before ignition. Cellular glass insulation uses closed cells, tiny air pockets trapped in rigid foam, to provide thermal resistance.
The biological meaning shaped the industrial ones. Biologists named the smallest living unit a cell because it was enclosed, just as early radio engineers saw radio coverage zones as discrete enclosed regions of space, each served by one transmitter. Both are fundamental units that combine to form a larger system: organisms are made of cells; networks are made of cells. The term fit so well that it was adopted across industries wherever a system breaks into modular, repeating units with internal structure and a defined boundary.
