Cow: From cattle to mining chocks
In the mine, a cow is not an animal but a wedge that stops a loaded car dead in its tracks.
To most people, a cow is a large domesticated bovine, valued for milk, meat, or leather. In a mining operation, a cow is something entirely different: a wooden or metal wedge, also called a chock, hammered under the wheel of a mine car to lock it in place on a slope or at a loading point. The cow holds back the car against gravity and prevents it rolling downhill when workers are loading ore, coal, or waste.
The mining cow serves a critical safety function. Once a loaded car sits on an incline, a miner drives the wedge tight under the wheel rim. On steep underground grades, where a single shifting car could kill someone below, the cow is as essential as any brake. It must be sturdy enough to bear the full weight of the load without splintering or shifting. Wooden cows, traditionally made from hardwood offcuts, were common in older mines; steel cows offer more durability and are still used today.
The term appears in other extraction trades and in quarrying, where similar wedges arrest the movement of carts and wagons on inclined tracks. In some regions and historical periods, miners also used the word to mean a simple brake block applied to a rail car by hand lever, though the wedge sense remains primary and most literal.
Why did a mining term borrow the name of a farm animal? The etymology is uncertain, but the metaphor likely rests on the idea of the cow as something heavy, immobile, and reliable, a creature that stands its ground. The cow wedge does exactly that: it plants itself under a wheel and refuses to budge. By the 19th century, when the term was well established in colliery and metal mine vocabulary, the connection between the animal and the chock had become invisible, leaving only the industrial meaning.
