Fly: A printing press's vibrating fingers
To most people, a fly moves through the air on wings. In printing, it catches and removes fresh paper with mechanical fingers.
In everyday speech, a fly is an insect: small, winged, and airborne. The word conjures motion through space, the rapid fluttering of wings, something light and quick and hard to catch. None of this applies to the industrial fly, which does not move through air at all.
In printing, a fly is a vibrating frame fitted with fingers, bolted to a power press. Its job is to receive each freshly printed sheet as it leaves the impression and carry it to a delivery pile or conveyor. The fingers grip the paper by its edge, vibrate in rhythm with the press cycle, and release it onto the pile once it has been transported clear of the press bed. The fly must work at precisely the same tempo as the press itself, catching each sheet in the moment after it is printed and before the next cycle begins. Early flies were hand-operated devices; modern ones are driven by cams or linkages synchronized to the press motor. The mechanical fingers are typically made of steel or plastic and can be adjusted to grip different paper weights and sizes.
The fly gets its name from the wing-like fluttering motion of its fingers as they vibrate back and forth. This is metaphor, not literal description. The fly does not fly; it oscillates. But the rapid opening and closing of its fingers, the way they move in and out, must have reminded early press operators of a wing in motion. The name stuck because the action, though not flight, shares that sense of quick rhythmic movement.
Other trades have borrowed the insect metaphor for mechanical parts that move by centrifugal force or oscillation. In mechanical engineering, a flyweight is a mass that moves outward as a shaft spins faster, responding to centrifugal force in a governor. In mining, a butterfly is a safety hook that hangs from the winding rope above a cage, designed to catch and stop the cage if the rope is rewound too far. In automotive, a butterfly door opens upward like a hinge at the roof, mimicking insect wings more literally than the printing fly ever does. Each borrows from nature to describe motion, but each is a different kind of motion for a different purpose.
The printing fly also spawned shop slang: a flyboy is a worker whose job is to remove the printed sheets from the delivery end of the press, clearing the fly's output so the mechanism can continue its rhythm uninterrupted. This role was common in hand-fed and semi-automatic presses, where speed and coordination with the press cycle were essential skills. The word reflects the speed and precision required; like a fly itself, a flyboy had to be quick and alert.
