Freewheel: spinning loose or letting go
To the rest of us, freewheeling means acting without restraint. In the shop, it means a gear still turning after the engine stops driving it.
In everyday speech, to freewheel is to coast along without control or commitment. A freewheeling idea is one that hasn't been vetted. A freewheeling lifestyle means doing what you want, unbound by rules. The metaphor is motion without direction, drift without destination.
On a mechanical floor, a freewheel is a specific device, usually a ratcheting hub or sprag clutch built into a wheel or shaft. Once the driving force stops (the pedal stops pushing, the engine stops turning), the output gear keeps spinning from momentum. The freewheel allows that continued rotation to happen without trying to drag the input back along with it. It is one-way motion: the wheel can drive the axle forward, but the axle cannot drive the wheel backward. Bicycles use freewheels in their rear hubs so your legs don't get yanked around when you coast downhill.
The industrial freewheel is not random or undirected. It is precisely engineered. A sprag clutch uses wedge-shaped rollers that lock under drive and release under overrun. A ratchet uses teeth and a pawl. Both work the same way mechanically: they transmit torque in one direction and slip cleanly in the other, with no grinding or loss of bearing life. They fail safely. They are reliable enough to trust your safety to, which is why they appear in belt conveyors (to prevent backslip when power cuts) and in starter motors (to let the motor disengage once the engine fires).
The two meanings diverged because they share the same core image: motion that continues without external force. But where social freewheeling implies chaos, mechanical freewheeling is the opposite. It is a controlled cessation of coupling. The gear spins on, but it is no longer bound to anything that will fight it. That safety, that clean break, is the whole point.
