Gate: from barrier to metal channel
In everyday English, a gate blocks passage. In the foundry, it is the controlled pathway that lets molten metal flow.
To most people, a gate is a hinged or sliding barrier at an entrance, a way to control who or what passes through. It can be locked or left open. The word carries the sense of access: you open the gate to let something in or out, and close it to keep things separate.
In metalworking and casting, the gate is something quite different. It is a deliberate channel or opening built into the mold itself, through which molten metal is poured. The metal does not splash freely into the cavity; instead, it enters through this controlled passage. The gate directs the flow, regulates the rate at which metal fills the mold, and helps reduce turbulence and air entrapment. A poorly designed gate can cause defects in the finished casting. Once the metal has cooled and the mold is broken away, the gate appears as a solid stub or runner attached to the casting, which must then be cut off in finishing.
The word "gate" in casting shares a root sense with its everyday use: it is a passageway that controls flow. But instead of blocking or allowing passage of people or vehicles, it manages the flow of liquid metal under heat and pressure. The gate is built to stay open during pouring; it is not a barrier to be opened and closed, but a permanent channel designed into the mold cavity.
Electronics has borrowed the term in a completely different way. An AND gate, a difference gate, or an equivalence gate in digital circuits are not passages for anything physical. They are logical switching elements that take input signals and produce output based on Boolean logic rules. The metaphor here is looser: the "gate" controls whether information or current flows forward, much as a real gate controls passage, but the operation is abstract and instantaneous rather than physical and continuous.
