Hydration: the chemistry that hardens concrete

To a jogger, hydration means drinking water. To a concrete contractor, it means the exothermic chemical reaction that transforms wet cement into solid stone.

In everyday language, hydration is about absorbing water: we hydrate ourselves by drinking, we hydrate our skin with moisturizer. The word suggests simply adding water to something dry, as though water were being absorbed like a sponge soaking up liquid.

In construction, hydration is a specific chemical process. When Portland cement powder meets water, the silicates and aluminates in the cement begin to react with the water molecules. This is not absorption but a true chemical transformation. The cement particles dissolve slightly, and new crystalline compounds form, primarily calcium silicate hydrate, which is the material that gives concrete its strength. This reaction releases heat, sometimes enough to warm freshly poured concrete noticeably. The process happens gradually over weeks and months, which is why concrete "cures" rather than simply dries.

The hydration reaction is exothermic and creates the rigid crystal matrix that binds sand, gravel, and other aggregates into a monolithic solid. Contractors monitor hydration carefully: too much water slows it or creates weak zones; too little and the cement cannot fully react, leaving the concrete porous and fragile. The rate of hydration depends on cement composition, water temperature, and environmental conditions. In cold weather, hydration slows; in hot weather, it accelerates, which can cause cracking if the concrete hardens too quickly.

The word "hydration" itself comes from the Greek for water, so the everyday and technical meanings share the same root. But where common hydration is passive absorption, construction hydration is an active chemical bond-forming process. Once complete, it is not reversible. Concrete that has fully hydrated cannot be "dehydrated" back to powder.
