Key: Lock opener versus shaft coupler

In everyday life, a key unlocks doors. On the shop floor, it locks parts together.

To most people, a key is a small metal object that slides into a lock to open a door, gate, or cabinet. It works because its unique shape matches the internal pins or wards of a specific lock. The word comes from Old English and shares roots across Germanic languages, all pointing to the idea of something that gives access or control.

In construction and mechanical engineering, a key is something entirely different: a small bar or block inserted between two parts, usually a shaft and a hub or wheel, to prevent them from rotating relative to each other. The shaft has a keyway, a recessed slot cut lengthwise into it. The wheel or gear has a matching keyway in its bore. The key sits in both keyways at once, acting as a mechanical wedge. If one part tries to spin while the other does not, the key resists the motion and keeps them locked together in orientation. This is called being keyed.

Keys come in standard shapes and sizes. A rectangular key is the most common: a flat bar with parallel sides. A tapered key slopes slightly, using gravity and friction to stay seated. A Woodruff key is semi-circular and sits in a half-moon keyway. The keyway itself is cut by a broach, a tool that pushes or pulls through the hole in precise passes, leaving a slot sized to hold the key snugly without play.

In carpentry, a keyhole takes the concept into structural joinery. When two large timbers or beams must be joined end-to-end or at an angle, a keyhole is an excavation or mortise cut into one beam to receive a projecting key on the other. The key is a tenon-like protrusion that fits into the keyhole, anchoring the joint and controlling how the pieces align. This prevented seasonal wood movement from causing misalignment before modern bolts and plates became standard.

The industrial key and the everyday key both derive their power from shape-matching and control. A lock key gives you access by matching the internal shape; a mechanical key gives power transmission by matching a pair of slots. Both words describe something that fits, something that prevents unwanted motion, and something that does its job through precise, engineered contact. The metaphor holds because in each case, the key is the small, specialized thing that makes the whole assembly work correctly.
