Knee: From Body Joint to Structural Angle

A knee is a joint in your leg, but on the shop floor it is any angled timber or metal brace that strengthens where two pieces meet.

To most people, a knee is the joint in the middle of the leg, where the thighbone and shinbone meet. It bends, it straightens, it supports your weight when you walk. The shape of a bent knee, that distinctive angle, is what manufacturers borrowed for the technical term.

In manufacturing, a knee is a structural component formed with an angle to reinforce a joint. It can be made of timber or metal and is installed where two members meet at something other than a straight line. The knee transfers load across that angle, preventing flex or collapse at the junction. A timber knee might brace the join between a ship's hull and deck, or where a roof rafter meets a wall; a metal knee serves the same purpose in steel construction or as a gusset plate in machinery frames. The angle itself varies with the application, but the principle is constant: the knee is there to hold firm where two pieces want to move relative to each other.

The construction trade has refined this concept further with the kneepiece, which is specifically an angular timber that strengthens the joint where two roof timbers meet, and the kneecap, a metal cover trim that fits over a panel rib after it has been cut and bent. Both follow the same logic: the angled form bears the strain at a corner or junction.

The metaphor works because a bent human knee is visually obvious and structurally sound. When you bend your knee, you are creating an angle that can bear weight. Manufacturers saw that same property in an angled brace and gave it the same name. The term transferred early to shipbuilding and carpentry, where angled timbers are essential, and spread from there into metal fabrication and general structural work. The name stuck because the image is immediate: an angle that bends but does not break.
