Lead: ahead in time, or ahead in phase?

Everyone knows lead means to go first, but in power systems it describes current that runs before the voltage that drives it.

In everyday speech, to lead is to go ahead, to guide, to be in front. You lead a meeting, lead a team, lead someone down a path. The word carries a sense of precedence and control. In electrical work, a lead is simply a wire or cable, as in power lead or axial lead, and this sense comes directly from the idea of leading a current from one place to another.

In energy and utilities, however, lead takes on a precise technical meaning rooted in the behavior of alternating current. In an AC circuit, voltage and current normally rise and fall together in lockstep, synchronized at the same phase angle. But when capacitive loads dominate a circuit, the current can advance ahead of the voltage that produces it. This is called a lead. The current reaches its peak before the voltage reaches its peak. This phase advance is measured in degrees, and lead becomes a quantifiable property of the circuit, not just a description of spatial position.

The divergence happened because AC power systems introduced a phenomenon that had no counterpart in the DC world or in everyday mechanics. When early electrical engineers needed language to describe this behavior, they borrowed the common verb: the current leads the voltage, just as one runner leads another in a race. The metaphor stuck because it is intuitive. Phase advance is invisible and abstract; lead is not.

Lead in this technical sense is the opposite of lag, where current trails voltage. Together, lead and lag describe the power factor of a circuit, a critical parameter for utilities because lagging current wastes energy and strains transmission lines. Capacitor banks are installed to reduce lag and improve power factor; they do this by introducing lead into the system. The term has remained standard in power engineering for over a century because it maps cleanly onto the underlying mathematics and the practical control strategies used to manage grids.
