Mesh: From Fabric to Electric Loops
Woven fabric has loops of thread; an electric circuit has loops of wire. In both cases, they are called mesh.
To most people, mesh is a material. It is fabric woven from thread or wire in a regular, open pattern, with holes between the strands. You see it in window screens, in fishing nets, in the metal grilles of speaker boxes. The holes themselves are also called mesh, and their size is measured in openings per inch. The word comes from old Germanic roots meaning "to mix" or "to knot together."
In energy and utilities, and in electrical engineering more broadly, mesh means something different but built on the same metaphor of interconnected loops. A mesh is a closed loop in an electric circuit, a path along which current can flow and return to its starting point. Mesh analysis is a formal method for solving circuits: you define one mesh current for each independent loop, write Kirchhoff's voltage law equation for each mesh, and solve the system of equations to find the actual currents in each wire. An essential mesh is one that does not contain any other meshes within it, making it a true independent loop.
The reason for the name is visual and conceptual. When you draw a circuit diagram with multiple loops, it looks like a grid or a net, a woven pattern on the page. Each loop is a strand in that pattern. The circuit analyst traces around each mesh as though tracing a thread through cloth, defining the voltage gains and losses along that path. The real current in any wire is then the sum of all the mesh currents that flow through it, just as the strength of a woven thread is the sum of all the fibers twisted into it.
This borrowing from textiles to circuits happened because both involve networks of connected lines that form a repeating pattern. The analogy helped electrical engineers teach and visualize a method that had become standard by the mid twentieth century. Mesh analysis itself is rigorous, grounded in Kirchhoff's laws and linear algebra, but the naming choice made the method more intuitive to explain and remember.
