Pad: from cushion to circuit board contact
To most people, a pad is something soft to sit on. To a circuit board designer, it is the precise copper target where a wire must land.
In everyday speech, a pad is a cushion, a protective layer, or a block of paper. You might pad your shoulders, pad your expense account, or tear a sheet from a notepad. The word carries the sense of something added for comfort, protection, or bulk.
On a printed circuit board (PCB), a pad is something far more specific: a small exposed area of copper foil designed to accept a wire, lead, or component pin. The pad is where electrical contact is made. It may be circular, square, or oval, and its size and shape are dictated by the diameter of the component lead it must accept and the soldering process to follow. Pads are arranged in rows or grids across the board surface and on internal layers. During manufacturing, solder is applied to the pad to create a permanent joint. Each pad has exact coordinates, and its position is determined by computer layout software before the board is etched.
The metaphor is transparent: just as a cushioning pad protects and supports, the copper pad on a circuit board receives and holds the incoming component lead. Both invite something to rest upon them. The industrial sense narrows the idea to a precise landing zone, measured in millimeters, where electrical continuity becomes essential.
Related terms in electronics follow similar logic. A solder pad is often called a land. Thermal pads are used to conduct heat away from high-power components. Ball grid array (BGA) packages use an array of solder pads arranged underneath the component package itself. In all cases, the pad is the interface between the board and the component, the meeting point where copper meets metal.
Outside PCB manufacturing, the word pad maintains its protective or supportive sense in other trades. Mining operations speak of a paddock, an excavation site, which shares the root notion of a defined work area. Motorcycles and automotive design use pad for brake friction material and pillion seats. In each case, something is added, received, or defined to serve a specific function.
