Pipe: A hollow defect, not a tube

In everyday speech, a pipe carries fluid or gas through a hollow channel. In metallurgy, to pipe means something far worse: the metal itself becomes hollow.

To most people, a pipe is a tube, a conduit. You lay pipes to move water, steam, exhaust gas or compressed air from one place to another. The pipe itself is solid; the hollow space inside is the feature that matters. In metallurgy, the word pipe refers to something almost opposite: a hollow defect that forms inside a solid metal ingot as it cools and solidifies from the molten state.

When a large steel or iron ingot solidifies, the outer layers cool and harden first while the interior remains hot and liquid. As the whole mass cools, the metal shrinks. The metal in the center shrinks away from the already-solid outer shell, leaving a void, a cavity, or a network of voids running through the ingot. This internal hollow is what metallurgists call piping. It is a defect: it weakens the ingot, reduces its usable weight, and may propagate into cracks during subsequent forging or rolling. Piping is distinguished from other casting defects by its location deep inside the ingot and its origin in uneven cooling and shrinkage.

The term likely arose because the hollow void, when exposed by sectioning or fracture, can resemble a pipe running through the metal, or a network of pipes joined together. The metaphor was natural to foundry workers who dealt with both real pipes (in the furnace plant and cooling systems) and the internal voids they were trying to prevent or minimize.

Metallurgists have developed methods to reduce piping: slower cooling, the use of hot tops or exothermic sleeves to keep the ingot center hotter longer, and the addition of alloying elements that change the shrinkage pattern. Industrial practice often accepts a certain degree of piping in large ingots because it can be removed during the initial breakdown or forging stage, but excessive piping renders the ingot scrap.

In mechanical engineering and rail work, the term pipe keeps its everyday sense: the blastpipe and petticoat pipe of a locomotive, the brakepipe running along a train, the sidepipe of an automobile exhaust system. These are all tubes carrying gases or fluids. The metallurgist's meaning remains confined to foundries and rolling mills, where it serves as a technical name for a real and costly defect in ingot quality.
