Spectacle: Eyewear versus signal light
To most people, spectacles mean glasses. On the railway, a spectacle is a rotating frame of coloured lenses that turns a signal arm into a lit beacon.
A spectacle in everyday speech is a pair of lenses worn to correct or protect the eyes. The word comes from the Latin for 'to watch' and applies to any striking public display. But on the railway, a spectacle is a mechanical component, not something you wear.
The railway spectacle is a frame, usually circular or ovoid, that holds multiple coloured glass lenses. It mounts on a semaphore signal arm, often near the mechanical blade itself. Behind the frame sits a lamp. As the signal arm moves to different positions, the spectacle rotates with it, so a different lens faces the lamp. The coloured glass filters the light: red for danger, green for clear, yellow for caution. At night, when the mechanical blade is hard to see, the coloured beam from the lamp does the work of signalling, visible from far down the track.
The spectacle was essential to railway operation before electric signals replaced mechanical arms. A driver approaching in darkness could read a red, green or yellow light and know the state of the line ahead. The frame had to be robust, the lenses had to be thick and true, and the rotation had to be exact so that each lens aligned precisely with the lamp. Early railway companies developed standard designs for their regions.
The metaphor is visual. Eyeglasses are frames that hold lenses to change what you see. A signal spectacle is a frame that holds lenses to change what others see. Both sit on a pivot or hinge; both present a different face to the world depending on how they are angled. The borrowing from eyewear terminology made sense to engineers of the Victorian era, and the name stuck even as the technology faded.
