Spin: rotation gone wrong

In everyday English, to spin means to rotate. In mechanical engineering, it means the opposite: a bearing that has stopped rotating relative to its shaft.

To spin something, in common use, is to make it turn. A top spins. A wheel spins. A dancer spins. The word carries no sense of damage or failure; it is simply the act of rapid rotation around an axis.

In a journal bearing, a spin is a catastrophic failure mode. The bearing is a cylindrical metal shell, usually made of soft bronze or babbitt, that sits inside a hard steel journal and allows the rotating shaft to turn freely. Oil between the two surfaces keeps them separate. Under normal operation, the shaft spins while the bearing stays still. But when the oil film breaks down, friction rises sharply. The soft bearing seizes to the rotating shaft and begins to rotate with it, grinding against both the shaft and the journal. Both surfaces are destroyed within moments. What starts as rotation ends as ruin.

A spin differs from other bearing failures because the bearing itself begins to move. In a simple wear failure, the bearing sits still while material degrades. In a spin, the bearing loses its grip on the journal and spins inside it like a stuck collar working free from a rod. The destruction is rapid and complete, and the failure is often total.

The term is thought to descend from the physical appearance of the failure: the bearing, caught between two rotating or sliding surfaces, spins helplessly while being worn away. It is also called a burned bearing, since the friction generates extreme heat. The word carries the irony of the industry: what the layman calls useful rotation, the engineer calls catastrophic spinning.
