Tap: From a Strike to a Thread-Cutting Tool

To tap means to strike lightly, but in the machine shop it means to cut internal screw threads with precision.

Outside the workshop, to tap is to strike something with a light, sharp blow. You tap a pencil on a desk, tap your foot to music, or tap someone on the shoulder. The word carries the sense of a quick, controlled impact.

In mechanical engineering, a tap is a hardened steel tool that cuts internal screw threads inside a hole. The tap is cylindrical, with multiple cutting edges (flutes) ground around its lower end. A handle, called a tap wrench or T-handle, is fitted to the upper end so the operator can turn the tool by hand or, in production work, drive it with a machine. As the tap rotates, it cuts away metal to form the helical grooves and crests that become the female thread. The cut metal comes away as fine chips. A tap must be withdrawn periodically to clear these chips and prevent jamming.

The industrial meaning sits on top of the everyday one. Threading a hole requires a series of controlled, rotating strokes. The operator advances the tap a fraction of a turn, then reverses it to break the chip. This rhythmic advance and retreat, repeated many times, resembles the tapping motion of striking, deliberate, measured, and repeated. The metaphor is strong enough that the tool itself took the name.

Taps come in sets: a taper tap (which enters the hole first and has a gradual cutting edge), an intermediate or plug tap, and a bottoming tap (which cuts threads all the way to the bottom of a blind hole). The pitch of the threads, the material being tapped (steel, aluminum, cast iron, plastic), and whether the hole is through or blind all govern which tap is selected and how it is used.

The term appears across related fields. In electrical engineering, a center tap is a connection point made halfway along a transformer winding, allowing access to intermediate voltage. The word extends the idea of striking or accessing a point, but the physical tool is gone; what remains is the sense of reaching a precise location within a larger assembly.
