Tape: Sticky strip or moving belt

To the office, tape holds things together. On the print floor, tape is the skeleton that moves them.

To most people, tape is an adhesive strip: Scotch tape on a package, masking tape on a paint job, duct tape holding a hinge together. The common sense is bonding, sticking, sealing. The tape stays still and holds two surfaces fast.

In industrial printing, tape has a completely different job. It is a strong flexible band, usually cloth or synthetic, that rotates on pulleys to form a moving belt. The tape itself does not stick. Instead, it acts as a mechanical conveyor, gripping and advancing sheets of paper, film, or cardboard through the press at a controlled speed. The tape must be tensioned correctly, tracked precisely, and replaced or spliced when it wears. A printing machine's tape is structural and kinetic, not adhesive.

The shift happened because the printing industry borrowed the word for a different purpose. When textile machinery and later printing presses needed a name for the cloth belt that moved material through the machine, "tape" was already in circulation for narrow fabric strips. Printers took the word and gave it a mechanical meaning. Where a seamstress uses bias tape to bind a seam, a press operator uses tape to drive the feeder system.

The confusion persists because both are flexible bands, and both can be synthetic. Splice tape, used to join a broken tape in a printing press, looks and feels like repair tape from a hardware store. But splice tape is engineered for mechanical load: it must withstand tension, speed, and repeated flexing without stretching or creeping. Office tape would fail in minutes.

The word tape now carries two unrelated technical meanings in the trades. In printing and converting, tape is mechanical infrastructure. In adhesives and supplies, it is consumable finishing material. The shape is similar; the function is opposite. One pulls. One sticks.
