Toed: When nails go in at an angle

To everyone else, toed means having digits. In construction, it describes a structural member held fast by nails driven diagonally through it.

Outside the trades, toed is a simple adjective: a creature has toes, a footprint is toed, a shoe is five-toed. The word points to digits at the end of a foot.

On a construction site, toed means something quite different. A board is toed when nails are driven through it at an angle, usually 45 degrees or steeper, rather than straight in. The nail enters one piece and passes through at a slant into another, creating a mechanical lock that a straight nail cannot match. A joist braced against a post, a wall plate fastened to a stud, a diagonal brace securing a frame: all may be toed rather than face-nailed. The technique trades straight penetration for lateral holding power.

Toenailing exists because some joints cannot take a nail driven perpendicular to the grain without splitting the wood or missing the receiving member entirely. When you have a vertical stud and a horizontal plate, or when you must join pieces that meet at an angle, driving a nail straight through the first piece often leaves it protruding uselessly on the far side. Toenailing pulls the first piece tight against the second while the angled nail bites into both.

The word itself echoes the posture: just as a toe points outward at an angle from the sole of the foot, so the nail enters at an angle from the face of the timber. The metaphor is old enough that it appears in nineteenth-century carpentry manuals without explanation. Builders recognized the shape and named it.

Modern construction codes specify toenail patterns by application: the spacing between nails, the angle, the nail size, and the number required to achieve a rated connection. A toed joint is not casual; it is deliberate and engineered.
