Walk: When the Tool Drifts Off Course

Outside the shop, walking means moving on foot. On the machine, it means your cutting tool is straying sideways when it should go straight.

To most people, walking is the simple act of moving forward on your feet. But on the shop floor, walk describes something that happens to a rotating tool as it advances into the workpiece. Instead of moving cleanly along a single axis, the tool drifts sideways, radially, away from the intended path. The tool wanders as it feeds forward, and the hole or surface it cuts becomes eccentric or off-center as a result.

In machining, walking is a deflection problem. When a twist drill or reamer enters a workpiece under axial feed (moving straight in), the geometry of the tool and the hardness of the material can cause lateral drift. A drill with unequal lip heights will walk. A tool entering at an angle, or a workpiece that spins out of round, will cause the tool to walk. The tool behaves like a reluctant pedestrian, wandering away from its assigned route despite your efforts to keep it centered.

Whether walking is a fault or a feature depends on the tool and the goal. A reamer walking into concentricity is desirable: the reamer self-corrects and homes in on the true center, producing a straighter, rounder hole. But a twist drill walking into eccentricity is a defect: the hole becomes misaligned, the wall thickness varies, and downstream fits fail. The same radial motion that fixes one problem ruins another.

The word walk in this sense borrows the everyday idea of unsteady or off-line motion. A drunk walks unsteadily; a worn machine walks off-center. The metaphor stuck in the shop because the behavior is visible and felt: you hear it, see it in the finish, and measure the damage when you bore the hole. It is not a technical term borrowed from another field, but rather shop slang that captured a real phenomenon so well it became standardized in trade reference.
