Wash: Gold from gravel, not soap from skin
To everyone else it means to clean with water. In mining, it means to separate gold ore from worthless rock using flowing water as your only tool.
In everyday speech, to wash is to clean something by applying water and usually soap or detergent. You wash your hands, your clothes, your car. The goal is to remove dirt or stains. But in mining and extraction, wash means something entirely different: a separation process, not a cleaning process. The goal is not to make something spotless, but to divide one substance from another based on weight and density.
In a gold mine or alluvial deposit, wash is the operation of running earth and broken rock through flowing water to recover gold particles. The lighter, worthless material (called washdirt) is carried away by the current. The heavier gold settles to the bottom of the sluice or pan. A washeryman operating in a washery performs this task systematically, day after day, on tons of material. The water does the sorting; human skill and gravity do the rest. No chemicals, no heat, no transformation. Just water moving fast enough to sort by mass.
Other trades have borrowed the word for their own separation and treatment processes. Textile production uses acid-wash to mottle fabric with bleach, and a backwasher to rinse impurities from carded wool. These are still separation operations in spirit, even if the mechanism differs. In plumbing, a spud washer is not a tool for washing, but a rubber ring that cushions and seals, protecting joints from damage. The word has drifted furthest there, kept alive perhaps only by the sound and the idea of something sitting between two parts.
The mining sense is the oldest and most literal. Water has always been the cheapest and most available tool for pulling apart loose rock from metal. Before electricity, before machinery, before chemistry, miners in streams and open pits used nothing but gravity, water, and patience to extract wealth from dirt. That core meaning, that image of water as a sorting force rather than a cleaning force, still defines the word on the shop floor today.
