Takt time is not cycle time

Two numbers that sound interchangeable and mean opposite things. One is set by the customer, the other by your process.

Takt time is the average production time per unit necessary to meet demand. It comes from dividing available working time by the number of units required. Nothing about your equipment or your staffing appears in that calculation.

Cycle time is what your process actually takes to produce one unit. It is a measurement of the line as it currently runs, and it changes when you change tooling, layout, staffing or method.

The comparison is the whole point

Takt is a target set outside the factory. Cycle is a fact measured inside it. Putting them side by side is what makes either number useful.

If cycle time exceeds takt, the line cannot meet demand no matter how hard people work, and the gap tells you how much capacity you need to find. If cycle time is well under takt, the line is producing faster than required, which sounds good and usually means inventory piling up somewhere.

Where the number goes wrong

Available time means genuinely available. Subtracting breaks, planned maintenance and changeovers gives a takt time the line can actually be measured against. Using the full shift length produces a target that is unreachable by construction, and teams quickly learn to ignore it.

The other frequent error is calculating takt once and treating it as a constant. Demand moves. A takt time from last quarter is a description of last quarter.
