60-0: braking distance from highway speed
A 60-0 test measures how far a vehicle travels from the moment the driver applies full braking force at 60 mph until it comes to a complete stop. The test is performed on a closed course, typically an empty runway or test track, with the vehicle starting at steady 60 mph and braking in a straight line. The result is given in feet or meters and reflects the combined effect of brake system design, tire grip, vehicle weight, and brake fluid condition.
The starting speed of 60 mph was chosen because it is both legally significant in many jurisdictions and representative of typical highway driving. Testing at this speed avoids the extreme variability that occurs in very low speed stops (where friction and brake response vary wildly) while remaining achievable on a variety of test surfaces. Results typically range from 100 to 150 feet for passenger cars, though high-performance vehicles with large brakes and sticky tires can stop in 90 feet or less, while older vehicles or those with poor brakes may exceed 180 feet.
Measurement and repeatability
The test requires multiple passes to establish a reliable figure, since a single stop can be affected by brake temperature, road surface moisture, tire wear, and variations in driver pressure on the pedal. Professional testing typically involves conditioning the brakes through several stops to reach steady temperature, then recording five or more consecutive stops and averaging the results. Tire pressure, ambient temperature, and the specific test surface are always noted, since these variables significantly affect stopping distance.
The 60-0 number appears frequently in automotive journalism and manufacturer specifications because it is a repeatable, comparable metric. It differs from real-world stopping distance, which includes reaction time and is measured from when a hazard is first perceived. The 60-0 test measures only the braking distance itself, after the decision to stop has been made and brakes are already being applied. This makes it useful for engineering and comparative purposes but not directly applicable to accident reconstruction or safety analysis without additional context.
Stopping distance depends heavily on brake pad composition, rotor material, brake fluid boiling point, and whether the vehicle has anti-lock brakes. All-wheel disc brakes generally allow shorter stopping distances than older drum-brake designs. Tire compound and tread depth are equally critical: a vehicle with worn or three-season tires can easily add 10 to 20 feet to its 60-0 distance compared to the same vehicle with premium summer performance tires.
