abb-wool: coarse fibers for strong warp threads
Abb-wool is the coarser, shorter fibers combed from raw fleece and reserved specifically for spinning into warp yarn. Because warp threads bear the primary tension and stress during weaving, they must resist breakage under constant strain. The coarser fibers in abb-wool, typically 2 to 4 inches long, pack more tightly when spun and create yarn with greater tensile strength than finer fibers would provide.
The preparation process separates abb-wool from higher-grade combed fibers called tops, which go to the weft or to luxury applications. A combing machine or hand carders remove shorter fibers, vegetable matter, and inferior material from fleece; abb represents the reject stream from this operation. This rejection is by design: strength matters far more than fineness in the warp, because the loom will stress it constantly, and a broken warp thread stops production immediately.
Warp preparation demands yarn that resists abrasion from heddles, reed, and warp beams, and that withstands the sizing or dressing applied to reduce hairiness and improve handling. Mills would spin abb-wool into relatively thick, tightly twisted yarn, sometimes two-ply or three-ply, for maximum durability. Finer weft yarn could then be woven against it, producing cloth with a sturdy structure and acceptable handle.
The economics of abb-wool were straightforward: it was the material left after extracting premium fibers, so its cost was low relative to its functional value in the loom. A working mill generated abb-wool continuously as combing residue and used it for its own warp production, eliminating waste and creating a closed loop within the mill's fiber supply chain.
The term itself derives from the old English and Scandinavian word for the fibers left in the comb, related to words meaning "to pull" or "to card." Once mills shifted toward cotton warps and synthetic fibers in the twentieth century, abb-wool became a specialized term found mainly in traditional wool and mixed-fiber operations, and in historical accounts of pre-industrial and early industrial textile production.
