Abeam describes a position perpendicular to a vessel's centerline or keel. If you stand on a ship and look forward along the direction of travel, abeam is directly to your left or right. In bearing terms, it means roughly 90 degrees (port abeam) or 270 degrees (starboard abeam) relative to the ship's heading.
The term comes from "a-" meaning "on" combined with "beam," the athwartship structural member that holds a ship's sides apart. Nautical language often encoded direction this way: "on the beam" naturally meant the direction the beams pointed. The prefix "a-" appears in many maritime directional terms: "aheap," "astern," "ahead."
Pilots and navigators use abeam as a quick reference point in collision avoidance, especially in confined waters or traffic lanes. A vessel abeam poses particular collision risk because both ships' forward arcs overlap; unlike head-on or overtaking scenarios, neither vessel can easily see the other's navigation lights at proper angle. Radio protocols require different safety language when vessels are abeam versus other relative positions.
In shipyard and marine survey work, abeam measurements matter for stability and structural inspection. The beam width at any particular station is measured athwartship (abeam); when documenting hull deformation or listing, surveyors note whether distortion is symmetric abeam the centerline. Crane operators loading cargo also use abeam references: loads suspended abeam the centerline create different stress patterns than those positioned forward or aft.
Aircraft navigation uses the term identically. A landmark or navigational beacon abeam the aircraft is at 90 degrees to the heading. Because radio direction-finding equipment returns a bearing, pilots confirm position by identifying landmarks abeam at known distances from their planned track.
