The mechanism lies in receptor fatigue and neural opponent processing. Cone cells gradually reduce their signalling output when exposed to constant light of a particular wavelength. When you redirect your gaze to a neutral surface, the fatigued red cones fire weakly while fresh green and blue cones maintain normal output. The brain interprets this imbalance as cyan, which is the complementary colour to red. The effect persists for seconds to minutes depending on intensity and duration of the original stimulus.
Variants and practical appearance
Accidental colours vary in vividness and duration based on viewing conditions. A brief glance at a coloured object produces a weak, short-lived afterimage; prolonged staring at high-intensity colour generates vivid, persistent ones.
