An adit is a horizontal or gently sloping tunnel that connects the interior of a mine directly to the surface, eliminating the need for vertical shafts. Unlike shafts, which require hoisting equipment and energy-intensive lifts, an adit lets miners and materials move in and out using gravity and simple track systems. This makes adits invaluable in mines where ore grades justify the capital investment in tunneling but where vertical infrastructure would be prohibitively expensive.
The typical adit has a gradient of 1 in 20 to 1 in 100, sloping downward into the hill to aid drainage and facilitate self-running loaded cars exiting the mine. A well-designed adit drains water naturally rather than requiring costly pumping; this was critical in deep mines before electric power became reliable. The cross-section varies with the ore type and haulage method, ranging from 6 feet high by 8 feet wide for hand-work operations to 12 feet or more when rail tracks or conveyor systems are used.
Adits serve multiple functions simultaneously. The same passage that hauls broken rock to the surface also supplies fresh air for ventilation and removes water seepage. In metalliferous mines, an adit at the lowest elevation becomes the natural collection point for mine drainage. Multiple adits are often driven at different elevations on a hillside to access different ore zones and to provide backup ventilation or escape routes. The highest adit in a mine is sometimes called the main level or portal level.
The term itself derives from Latin aditus, meaning approach or entrance. It is used almost exclusively in hard-rock mining (coal, metal ores, tin, copper) and is rare in contexts like stone quarrying, where surface working dominates. In slate and granite extraction, what might be called an adit in metal mines is often simply a cut or open face.
The location and elevation of the adit are determined by geology and topography. If the ore body outcrops on a hillside, a horizontal adit can reach it directly. If the hillside is too steep or the water table too high for an adit to work efficiently, miners resort to shafts or inclined planes instead. In some districts, particularly in Cornwall and Wales, the landscape is still shaped by networks of adits driven centuries ago, many now abandoned or flooded.
Modern mines rarely drive new adits; underground mining has shifted to deeper, sub-vertical operations served by shafts and ramps. However, adits remain important for dewatering legacy mines, for accessing small ore bodies where full infrastructure is uneconomical, and for archaeological and heritage documentation of mining regions. Their presence in the landscape is a reliable indicator of historic hard-rock mining activity.
