ag: the gravel and sand that makes concrete work
Aggregate, shortened to ag on site, is the bulk filler material in concrete: the stones, gravel, and sand that make up 60 to 75 percent of the mix by volume. Cement paste binds these particles together, but the ag itself carries most of the structural load. Without it, you would have only weak, expensive cement. The term covers everything from dust-fine material (fines) through coarse stones up to about 40 mm across, depending on the application and the mixer's capacity.
On a concrete job, ag arrives in distinct grades. Fine ag is sand, usually 0 to 4 mm or 0 to 5 mm depending on regional standards. Coarse ag runs from 4 mm up to 10, 14, 20, or 40 mm, with the size limit set by the mix design and the thickness of the concrete being placed. A thin slab might use only 10 mm maximum coarse ag, while a massive foundation can take 40 mm. The correct gradation, measured by sieving a sample, affects workability, strength, and how much cement you need to achieve a target strength.
Sourcing and cost matter. Ag is extracted from quarries, pits, and river beds, then washed, crushed, and screened. The material is cheap by weight but heavy to haul, so distance from site to quarry drives total cost more than the ag itself. Recycled ag from demolished concrete can substitute for virgin material in non-critical work, though quality control is looser. Salt spray in marine ag or reactive silica in some coarse stones can cause long-term concrete damage, which is why testing and material certificates exist.
Problems arise when ag is not what the spec calls for. Too much fines (clay dust) weakens concrete and traps air. Oversized stones that cannot pack into the concrete properly create voids and weak planes. Contamination by soil, organic matter, or salt degrades durability. On site, ag must be kept clean and separate by size; wet ag and dry ag behave differently in the mixer, and moisture affects the final water-to-cement ratio if not accounted for. Stockpiling ag without drainage or cover can lead to sorting (coarse stones rolling to the edges) and contamination from rain or dust.
The abbreviation ag is construction shorthand. You will see it in mix designs written as ratios like 1:2:4 (cement to fine ag to coarse ag), in delivery notes, and in site conversations about aggregate supply.
