almond furnace: a low-heat refining hearth for precious metals

An almond furnace was a small, low-temperature furnace used in precious metal refining, particularly in gold and silver work. It derived its name from its almond-shaped cross-section when viewed from above, a design that allowed heat to distribute evenly across the hearth while keeping temperatures controlled enough to prevent excessive oxidation of the metal being processed. The furnace sat at floor level or slightly above, with a shallow, gently curved working surface.

The primary job of the almond furnace was to separate refined metal from cinders, the mixed mass of oxidized impurities, flux residues, and unreacted material left after initial smelting or cupellation. Heat from below would soften the cinder mass enough that the heavier, molten precious metal would settle and separate by gravity, collecting in a depression or well at the deepest point of the hearth, while the lighter cinders and slag could be raked away or lifted off once they cooled sufficiently.

These furnaces burned charcoal and relied on natural or bellows-driven draft rather than forced air systems. The operator controlled temperature by adjusting fuel quantity and air supply, a skill that took years to develop properly. Running the furnace too hot risked excessive metal loss through oxidation and volatilization; too cool and the cinders would not flow freely enough to separate effectively.

Why the term is obsolete

The almond furnace belonged to a tradition of hand-worked refining hearths that became redundant as industrial metallurgy adopted mechanized reverberatory furnaces, muffle furnaces, and later electrolytic refining methods in the 19th and 20th centuries. Modern precious metal refineries use controlled-atmosphere furnaces with thermostatic regulation, which eliminated the guesswork and labor intensity of the old design. The term survives today only in historical texts on assaying and museum descriptions of period workshops.
