androgynous

Of a connector or docking port, able to connect to another connector or port of the same type, rather than being restricted to connecting to solely male or solely female connectors or ports.

androgynous: a connector that mates with its own kind

In electronics assembly and equipment design, an androgynous connector is one that can mate with an identical connector without requiring a designated male or female counterpart. Both sides of the connection are electrically and mechanically identical, so either connector can plug into the other. This eliminates the need to stock or manage separate male and female versions of the same connector type.

The most common industrial example is the MIL-DTL-38999 circular connector family, which includes androgynous variants used in aerospace and military applications. Some USB Type-C implementations also function as androgynous systems, though USB terminology typically avoids the word. Androgynous designs are also found in fiber optic couplers and some industrial fluid quick-disconnects, where mechanical symmetry allows connection in either orientation.

The practical advantage is straightforward: installation crews cannot install the connector backwards or incorrectly mate incompatible versions. On production lines, this reduces assembly errors and rework. In field service, technicians need only stock one connector variant instead of two, cutting inventory costs. The trade-off is that androgynous connectors are more expensive to manufacture than simple gendered connectors, since both halves must be precision-engineered to identical tolerances.

The term borrows from human biology, where androgynous describes having characteristics of both sexes. In connectors, it means the part has no assigned gender, neither inherently male nor female. This terminology became standard in the 1960s as circular connectors proliferated in military and aerospace systems, where designers needed precise language to specify connector behavior in technical drawings and procurement documents.

Androgynous designs place demands on contact geometry and insertion force. The connector contacts must work correctly regardless of which side goes in first, and the mechanical guides must permit mating in either direction without binding or cross-threading. This is why androgynous connectors typically cost 30 to 50 percent more than equivalent gendered pairs and why they appear mainly in applications where error-proofing or field flexibility justifies the expense.
