anglesmith: the blacksmith who bends steel to shape

An anglesmith is a blacksmith who specializes in forging and shaping structural steel angles, particularly angle iron (also called angle steel or L-section steel). The work involves heating flat steel stock to forging temperature, typically 1100 to 1200 degrees Celsius, then bending and hammering it into the distinctive L-shaped cross-section that gives angle iron its name and structural purpose. The resulting member has two flanges meeting at a right angle, most commonly with equal leg lengths, though unequal angles exist for specific applications.

Angle iron serves as a fundamental building block in structural steelwork, particularly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when it was the standard choice for frameworks, braced joints, and reinforcement. An anglesmith would produce angles in various sizes, from light material a few millimeters across to heavy structural pieces with legs 150 millimeters or more. The work required precise control of heating, positioning under the hammer or press, and successive blows to achieve uniform thickness and consistent right angles. Finishing often involved straightening, edge dressing, and sometimes drilling or punching holes for riveted connections.

The role demanded both strength and judgment. Overheating caused grain growth and brittleness; underheating meant the steel resisted shaping and required repeated reheating. The anglesmith had to assess temperature by color alone, recognizing the precise orange-yellow that indicated readiness for forming. Symmetry mattered: uneven legs or poor angle geometry would cause problems when the piece was assembled into a frame or joint.

The anglesmith's trade began to decline as rolling mills became widespread and capable of producing angle iron economically and to tight tolerances. By the mid twentieth century, structural angles were almost exclusively rolled rather than hand-forged, making the specialized anglesmith role largely obsolete. Today the term survives as a historical descriptor and occupational surname, a marker of metalworking skill that has been absorbed into industrial production.
