ANI: the phone number the caller's equipment reveals

Automatic Number Identification is a signaling protocol that transmits the calling party's telephone number to the receiving end before the call connects. The telephone exchange extracts this number from the originating switch and encodes it in the signaling layer, typically in the form of dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) digits or, in modern digital systems, in the out-of-band signaling channel. ANI arrives at the destination switch separately from the voice path and can be captured and logged by switching equipment or customer premises equipment (CPE) without requiring the caller to announce themselves.

ANI differs from Caller ID, which is a consumer-facing service that displays the number on a telephone set. ANI is the underlying technical mechanism; Caller ID is what the end user sees. In trunk signaling between switches, ANI information is carried in the ISUP (ISDN User Part) message set or, in older systems, in MF (multifrequency) digits. In SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) networks, the P-Asserted-Identity or From header carries equivalent information. ANI is mandatory for billing on long-distance and toll calls, and it has been embedded in telephone switching since electromechanical exchanges.

Industrial and call center use

In call centers and inbound telephone environments, ANI is not optional: it is the foundation of call routing and customer record lookup. When a customer calls, the ANI arrives before the agent answers, allowing the switch or telephony platform to query a customer database and deliver the caller's account information to the agent's screen. This is called screen pop or computer telephony integration (CTI). ANI failures or delays cause calls to drop into generic queues or require agents to ask for account numbers, degrading efficiency and customer experience.

ANI blocking or ANI spoofing occurs when the calling party deliberately transmits false ANI information, typically for fraud or harassment. Telecommunications carriers implement validation rules and ANI authentication schemes to detect mismatches between the calling party's service address and the ANI being sent. Regulatory bodies such as the FCC have increasingly penalized carriers that fail to authenticate ANI on toll-free and long-distance calls; the STIR/SHAKEN framework is one modern response to ANI spoofing.

The term ANI has persisted in engineering and carrier circles for decades because it names the signal itself, not the user-facing feature. Switching technicians, network engineers, and call center operations teams must understand ANI as a technical requirement separate from Caller ID, since ANI can be present, absent, or incorrect independent of what appears on a customer's telephone display.
