aquaplane: when water lifts your tyres off the road
Aquaplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up between a vehicle's tyre and the road surface faster than the tyre can displace it, causing the tyre to lose contact with the pavement. The vehicle continues forward but without friction or steering control, floating on the water film instead. This happens most often on wet roads at higher speeds, typically above 50 km/h depending on water depth, road texture, and tyre condition.
The phenomenon is purely physical. Water is incompressible, and if a tyre's tread grooves cannot channel water away quickly enough, hydrodynamic pressure builds beneath the tyre, lifting it minutely off the asphalt. Even 2 or 3 millimetres of standing water on a smooth road surface can trigger aquaplaning in a car traveling at motorway speed. Worn tyres with shallow grooves (below 1.6 mm depth at the minimum wear indicators) are far more susceptible, as are tyres under-inflated or carrying excessive load.
A driver aquaplaning has no steering input and no braking grip. The vehicle will slide in the direction of travel regardless of wheel position. Recovery requires easing off the accelerator, avoiding sudden braking or sharp steering inputs, and waiting for the tyres to regain contact as speed naturally decreases or water is displaced. Heavy braking on aquaplaning tyres can cause a skid or spin.
Road surface texture plays a major role. Smooth asphalt or concrete motorways, especially those polished by heavy traffic, are high risk. Newer road surfaces with high-friction bituminous concrete drain water more effectively. Worn lane lines and a slight camber help water runoff, whereas standing water on flat or degraded surfaces increases aquaplaning likelihood. Road markings themselves can trap water and create localized aquaplaning zones.
The term originated in racing, where drivers on wet tracks first documented the loss of grip on standing water, likening the sensation to a plane skidding on water. Aquaplaning is distinct from hydroplaning, a synonym in North American usage, though both refer to the same loss of traction. It is a hazard taught in advanced driving courses and considered in road design standards that specify drainage and surface texture specifications for high-traffic routes.
