Arago spot: light appears where shadow should be

The Arago spot is a bright point of light that materializes at the dead center of a shadow cast by a circular obstacle, defying what geometry alone would predict. When coherent light (typically a laser or collimated beam) encounters a circular disc or ball, the wavefronts diffract around the edges and recombine at the axis behind the obstacle. At the geometric center of the shadow, these diffracted waves interfere constructively, producing a concentrated spot of illumination. The effect is entirely wave-based; it vanishes if the light source is incoherent or the beam spatially incoherent.

The phenomenon requires specific geometric and wavelength conditions to be visible. The disc diameter, the distance from source to obstacle, and the distance from obstacle to observation plane all matter. For a disc of diameter D, the spot is easiest to see when the observation screen is placed at a distance roughly proportional to D squared divided by wavelength. With visible light and a disc a few millimeters across, the spot can be bright and sharp enough to photograph. Infrared or microwave diffraction produces the same effect at much larger scales; radar engineers observing it around cylindrical structures have documented it under various names.

Historical and experimental context

The effect was predicted theoretically by Fresnel's diffraction analysis in the early 1800s and was demonstrated experimentally by Poisson and Arago to confirm the wave theory of light. It served as striking evidence against the corpuscular theory that was dominant at the time. The name honors Arago, though Poisson actually predicted it would occur and then skeptically used it to challenge Fresnel's work, only to have the prediction confirmed experimentally. The spot is sometimes called Poisson's spot in older literature or in continental Europe.

In practical optics work, the Arago spot is usually an unwanted effect. It appears in high-resolution imaging systems when a small obstruction blocks part of the aperture, producing a false bright point in the image that can corrupt measurements or trigger automated detection systems. In interferometry, where diffraction patterns are deliberately used, operators must account for the spot's presence in the fringe data. Laser imaging through occluding particles or dust also produces this artifact. Understanding the effect helps diagnosticians distinguish genuine targets from optical ghosts.

The spot's visibility depends strongly on coherence length and beam quality. A partially coherent source produces a dimmer, broader spot. Real optical systems with aberrations or misalignment degrade the effect. The spot is also sensitive to the smoothness of the obstacle edge; a rough or diffuse boundary weakens the constructive interference. In modern computational imaging and numerical simulations, the Arago spot often appears as a validation that Fresnel diffraction modeling is working correctly.
