An arc blast is the violent expansion of air and vaporized metal that occurs when a high-energy electrical arc ignites and burns out of control. The arc temperature reaches thousands of degrees Celsius within milliseconds, causing the surrounding air and any conductive material in the gap to expand explosively. This expansion generates a pressure wave capable of projecting debris, causing severe burns, and knocking workers across a room.

Arc blasts most commonly occur in medium and high-voltage equipment: switchgear, bus bars, cable terminations, and transformer connections. The blast is distinct from the arc itself, it is the blast that causes injury. A worker standing 60 centimeters from a 30,000-ampere arc may receive second-degree burns; the pressure wave alone can exceed 2,000 pounds per square foot. The sound reaches 160 decibels, causing permanent hearing damage.

What Triggers Arc Blasts

Arc blasts occur when electrical insulation fails, when components are misaligned during maintenance, or when moisture and conductive dust lower the breakdown voltage between conductors. A loose connection, a tool dropped across terminals, or deliberate contact can initiate an arc. Once the gap ionizes and current flows, the resistance of the arc itself heats the air and metal vapor to extreme temperatures. The flash can last only a few cycles of AC current, but that is enough to cause the explosion.

Protection against arc blast relies on several layers: proper equipment design with adequate spacing, enclosure ratings that contain the blast, insulated tools, specialized arc-rated personal protective equipment, and hot-work procedures that isolate energized circuits. Many jurisdictions now require arc flash hazard analysis under standards such as NFPA 70E to quantify the incident energy at every point where workers might be exposed. Arc-rated clothing is rated in calories per square centimeter of thermal energy it will withstand before ignition.

The term arc blast distinguishes the physical explosion from the arc flash, which is the radiant heat and light. Both occur during the same event, but arc blast refers specifically to the pressure wave. Engineering controls such as arcing contacts designed to let the arc burn safely away from the worker, or rapid-response arc detection relays that open the circuit in milliseconds, reduce the severity of both hazards.
