The term describes impact damage to the rear of a car, typically involving a second vehicle striking the back bumper, trunk, or rear quarter panels. It is distinctly different from a frontal collision or a side-impact, and the damage pattern tells a specific story about how the accident occurred.
The slang origin is straightforward: the asshole (rear end) of one vehicle has met with the front end (the ass, face, or front) of another. Regional variation exists, and some shops use milder terminology for paperwork, but the term is widespread enough in collision repair, insurance, and fleet management that workers understand it immediately. It is especially common in conversation between mechanics and estimators assessing damage claims.
A typical rear-end impact causes crumple damage to the rear bumper cover, compression of the trunk lid, deformation of the rear frame rails, and potentially structural damage to the rear bulkhead. If the impact is severe enough, the damage extends forward, affecting fuel tanks, rear suspension components, and even drivetrain elements. Vehicles with softer, plastic-heavy rear ends (common on compact and mid-size cars) often show extensive cosmetic damage with minimal structural harm, while trucks and performance vehicles with solid rear frames may absorb impact differently and require frame straightening.
The distinction matters because rear-end collisions carry legal assumptions: the striking vehicle is typically deemed at fault, as the driver had a duty to maintain safe following distance and reaction time. This makes the terminology useful in claims processing.
