azogue: silver ore that responds to mercury extraction
Azogue is silver ore rich enough and chemically suitable for processing by amalgamation, the oldest industrial method of separating silver from rock using mercury. The term originated in Spanish colonial mining (from Arabic azogue, meaning mercury itself), and persists in technical Spanish and Portuguese mining vocabulary. An azogue ore typically contains native silver, silver sulphides, or silver chlorides, minerals that form stable amalgams when mixed with liquid mercury at modest temperatures.
The defining characteristic is chemical compatibility with amalgamation. Not all silver ores qualify. Ores heavily laden with copper, lead, or iron sulfides often resist mercury treatment because these metals preferentially amalgamate, consuming mercury and reducing silver recovery. Arsenical or antimony-bearing ores similarly interfere. A workable azogue ore will yield silver recovery rates of 70 to 90 percent when properly roasted to eliminate sulfides, then ground fine and worked with mercury in pans or barrels.
Processing and practical limits
Traditional azogue processing involved roasting ore at 400 to 600 degrees Celsius to convert sulfides to oxides, then grinding to minus 200 mesh (roughly 75 micrometers). Mercury was added in batches; agitation and time allowed silver to dissolve into the mercury phase, forming a paste. The paste was then heated gently to drive off mercury vapor, leaving a silver-rich residue for smelting. This method worked well for ores with silver values between 100 and 2,000 grams per tonne.
The azogue classification fell out of common use during the twentieth century as cyanide leaching and flotation-concentration replaced amalgamation in most industrial operations. However, the term remains embedded in Spanish and Latin American mining literature and in historical mining records. Modern small-scale and artisanal operations in remote regions sometimes still apply amalgamation to suitable ores, making the concept still relevant in informal sector documentation.
The word itself reveals the process: it names the ore by the treatment it receives, much as floatable ore names ore suitable for flotation. This naming convention, defining ore by its metallurgical pathway rather than its mineral species, was common in historical mining, where practical recovery mattered more than geological taxonomy.
