Barstock is metal in rod or bar form, supplied as a semi-finished blank for machining into parts. It arrives in standard diameters and lengths, already drawn or rolled from ingot, eliminating the need to forge or cast rough stock in-house. The material is straight, stress-relieved, and dimensionally predictable, which makes it the economical choice for volume production of shafts, pins, fasteners, and similar components.

Common barstock materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and bronze. Steel barstock typically comes in round, square, or hexagonal section; aluminum and non-ferrous metals are also supplied round or as flat plate stock. Diameter tolerances are close enough that you can work directly from nominal dimension without heavy rough cuts. A 1-inch steel round bar, for example, will arrive within a few thousandths of nominal, saving spindle time and tool life.

The term bar stock and barstock are used interchangeably in shops, though bar stock remains more formal. Suppliers stock common sizes in bulk, so lead times are short and cost per unit is low. If you need unusual diameters, alloys, or heat-treated conditions, you specify these when ordering, accepting longer lead time and minimum order quantities. Hot-rolled barstock is rougher and cheaper; cold-drawn barstock costs more but machines cleaner and holds tighter tolerances.

Machinists must account for scale and surface finish. Hot-rolled stock carries a layer of oxidized skin that dulls tools if you plunge directly into cuts; a light facing pass removes scale and improves tool life. Cold-drawn barstock requires no such pass and produces better surface finish without additional work, justifying the higher material cost for precision parts or tight finishes.

Barstock differs from structural bar or rail, which is supplied to structural codes and intended for bolting or welding into frames. It also differs from tool steel, which arrives pre-hardened or requires specific heat treatment protocols. Barstock is neutral stock, its condition and cleanliness optimized for swift machine removal and dimensional finishing.
