Beartrap: stationary radar speed enforcement setup

A beartrap is a fixed or semi-mobile radar unit deployed by law enforcement to detect and record vehicle speeds on roadways. The name, borrowed from wildlife trapping, reflects how the installation waits stationary for offenders to pass through its detection zone. Unlike roving radar operated from a moving patrol vehicle, a beartrap occupies a fixed location, often concealed behind roadside features such as trees, billboards, or parked vehicles, making it invisible to approaching drivers until they pass through.

The core of a beartrap installation is a radar gun or fixed radar antenna that transmits microwave signals and measures the Doppler shift of returning signals to calculate vehicle velocity. Most beartraps operate in the X-band (around 10.5 GHz) or K-band (around 24 GHz) frequency ranges. The operator, positioned nearby in a patrol vehicle or fixed location, monitors the radar display and notes vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit. When a violation is detected, the officer either initiates a traffic stop or radios to a colleague stationed downrange to conduct the intercept.

Beartraps are frequently placed in sections where speed violations create documented safety hazards: residential zones, school approach areas, highway merge points, and curves with high accident histories. They are particularly common at the boundaries between jurisdictions where speed limits change abruptly, since drivers often fail to decelerate promptly. Some departments use them in fixed locations for weeks or months to establish enforcement presence; others move them regularly to prevent drivers from learning patrol patterns and adjusting their behavior only when observed.

The primary vulnerability of beartrap enforcement is legal challenge. Radar measurements can be affected by road conditions, vehicle size, and operator technique. Many jurisdictions now pair radar with laser (LIDAR) or photography to create corroborating evidence. Some states or localities have statutory requirements for radar certification, operator training documentation, and equipment calibration records before citations can proceed to adjudication. The beartrap's stationary nature makes it defensible in some respects, since the officer is not making real-time driving decisions, but calibration and maintenance records are scrutinized heavily in contested cases.

Public perception treats beartraps as revenue generation tools rather than safety measures, particularly when deployed on highways with high traffic volume and ambiguous speed limit signage. This reputation, whether justified, creates political pressure in some communities to restrict their use or require high-visibility warning signage upstream of enforcement zones. The beartrap remains standard enforcement infrastructure across North America, though its effectiveness at sustainable speed reduction is debated among traffic safety researchers.
