Bedrock is the continuous solid mass of rock that lies beneath all surface material, soil, sediment, and weathered debris. It forms the stable floor of the overburden, the point where digging stops being easy and starts requiring serious equipment. Depth to bedrock varies from metres in upland terrain to hundreds of metres in sedimentary basins; in some coastal plains it may never be reached at practical depths.
In mining, bedrock determines where ore bodies are likely to sit and defines the scale of stripping required to reach them. The transition from overburden to bedrock is sharp: above it, material can often be moved with draglines and hydraulic excavators; at and below it, you need blasting, crushing, and loading onto haul trucks. The bedrock surface itself tells a geological story, showing ancient erosion patterns, faulting, and folding that may control mineralization.
Composition varies by region and geology. In granite terrain, bedrock is typically crystalline and hard, demanding careful blast design and wearing equipment quickly. In sedimentary areas, bedrock may be sandstone, limestone, or shale, sometimes more friable and occasionally weaker than assumed. Weathered zones immediately below the fresh rock surface can be softer and more unstable than either the overburden or the solid bedrock below, creating slope hazards in deep pits.
Practical challenges
Drilling and blasting rates in bedrock depend heavily on composition and fracture pattern. Hard, tight granite may yield 20 to 40 tonnes per blast hole, while fractured schist or limestone can exceed 100 tonnes per hole. Water percolation through bedrock fractures affects pit stability and dewatering costs. In underground work, bedrock quality is classified by the rock quality designation (RQD) system to guide support design.
The term is purely descriptive and geological in origin, distinguishing the primary in-situ rock from surface materials. It carries no connotation of value or usefulness, unlike ore or mineral. A bedrock exposure teaches you something about the district geology; a bedrock floor defines your mining costs and schedule.
