A printing and photoengraving technique dating from the late 19th century, involving coloured dots or some other simple repeating pattern, spaced or overlapping, to produce more complex mixed colours.
Ben Day: mechanical pattern dots for flat-color printing
The Ben Day process is a mechanical technique for applying uniform patterns of colored dots, lines, or stipples to a printing plate or stone. Invented by Benjamin Day in 1879, it allowed printers to build optical color mixtures using only a few base inks, extending the range of tones and hues available in letterpress, lithography, and early offset work without requiring a separate engraved plate for each shade.
The method relies on a transparent screen or gelatine roller etched with a regular repeating pattern. When rolled across an inked printing surface or a freshly inked stone, it deposits ink in dots or lines whose size, spacing, and overlap can be varied. A coarse screen produces large dots that appear as distinct spots; a fine screen yields dots that optically blend into a uniform tone when printed. By using screens of different patterns and applying them in sequence with different colored inks, the printer achieves color separation effects similar to four-color process work, but without the expense or complexity of photographic plates.
Common patterns include regular dot grids (most frequent), parallel lines (for shading and tonal gradation), and specialized motifs. The quality of the final image depends heavily on register accuracy: misalignment between successive screen applications creates color fringing. Dot sizes typically ranged from about 0.3 mm to 1.5 mm in diameter, limited by both screen manufacturing and press pressure control. The process works best on smooth paper and coated stocks; rougher surfaces cause uneven ink transfer.
Ben Day remained standard in comic books, newspaper supplements, and commercial advertising through the mid-20th century, precisely because it required no photographic equipment and could be performed by hand on stone or plate. It survives in some editorial and decorative applications today, often deliberately chosen for its graphic, graphic quality. The term is sometimes used loosely to describe any regular mechanical dot pattern in printing, though technically it refers only to the screening method itself.
The process declined sharply after 1960 as photomechanical and digital color separation methods became affordable. However, understanding Ben Day remains relevant to print historians, restoration specialists, and designers working in retro or pop-art modes, since it distinguishes an entire visual language of printed color from later halftone and offset techniques.
