bind off: securing the last loops to finish knit fabric
A bind off is the process of closing out active stitches on a knitting needle so that the fabric does not unravel. Once the desired length of knitted fabric is reached, the loops must be permanently locked in place by passing each stitch through the one beside it, creating a finished edge. This step is essential in both hand knitting and industrial knitting; without it, pulling a single yarn would cause the entire piece to ladder down.
The standard industrial bind off uses a single-needle technique where yarn is drawn through each loop in sequence. On flatbed knitting machines, the bind off carriage performs this automatically as the final course is completed. Circular knitting machines typically use a separate bind off mechanism that may operate while the cylinder continues to rotate or after knitting stops. The speed and tension of bind off directly affect the elasticity and appearance of the finished edge; too tight and the edge becomes rigid and prone to puckering, too loose and the stitches separate noticeably.
Variants and edge treatment
Different fibers and end uses call for different bind off methods. Lightweight yarns on fine gauge machines often use a gathered bind off, where multiple stitches are drawn through a single loop to create density. Heavy knits may use a chained bind off that leaves a visible braided edge. Some production runs add a secondary treatment, such as heat-setting the bound-off edge to improve stability, particularly with synthetics like polyester or nylon.
Problems arise when bind off tension is not calibrated correctly for the yarn weight and machine gauge. Loose binding leaves gaps and allows stitches to slip; tight binding creates a drawing-in effect that distorts garment shape and reduces width. On machines operating at speed, uneven tension across the width of the fabric produces a wavy or scalloped finished edge rather than a straight line. Thread breakage during bind off, whether from mechanical friction or material defect, results in incomplete binding and must trigger manual repair before the piece leaves the machine.
The term traces to the hand knitting vocabulary where the action of binding off literally binds, or locks, the final stitch to itself. In industrial contexts, it remains the standard term despite the process now being mechanized. Quality control staff routinely inspect bound-off edges for consistency and anchor strength, as this edge must withstand seaming operations and customer handling without separation.
