The bite point is the exact position in the clutch pedal's travel where the clutch disc begins to engage with the flywheel, transmitting power from the engine to the gearbox. Below this point, the clutch is fully disengaged and the pedal movement has no effect on engine braking or drive. Above it, progressive grip increases as friction material makes contact. Finding and using the bite point smoothly is essential for controlled starts, hill holds, and low-speed manoeuvring.

On a typical manual clutch, the bite point sits roughly two-thirds of the way up the pedal travel, though this varies by vehicle design, clutch wear, and hydraulic pressure. A new clutch with fresh friction material may engage higher up the pedal stroke; as the lining wears thinner over tens of thousands of miles, the bite point gradually creeps lower. Drivers learn to feel this through pedal resistance and engine response, and they must readjust their technique as wear progresses.

The bite point is not a fixed mechanical threshold but a gradual transition zone. Across the friction area of the clutch disc, engagement happens progressively as the pressure plate applies force. Friction material composition, surface temperature, and hydraulic system condition all influence exactly where noticeable drive begins. Sitting at the bite point with the engine idling can cause the vehicle to creep forward slowly, a useful behaviour for hill starts but demanding on the friction material if held too long.

Misjudging the bite point causes common faults. Biting too late (releasing the pedal too far) risks a sharp, jerky engagement that stalls the engine or lurches the car. Riding the clutch deliberately around the bite point, as some drivers do to control speed in traffic, generates excessive heat and accelerates friction wear, shortening clutch life from the typical 80,000 to 200,000 miles down to perhaps 40,000. Hydraulic systems may also leak, raising the bite point unpredictably and making the clutch feel grabby.

The term bite comes from the friction material's grip on the flywheel surface, as if the clutch disc were biting down. In trade usage, riders and drivers also speak of a clutch biting in, catching, or picking up when they feel this transition under load. Modern vehicles with dual-mass flywheels or spring-dampened hubs may have a less sharply defined bite point, as the secondary mass absorbs some of the torque shock.
