The process of restoring an electric power station or part of an electric grid to operation without relying on the external electric power transmission network.

black start: restarting the grid when everything is dark

A black start is the procedure for bringing a power station or section of the electrical grid back online after a complete loss of power, without drawing electricity from the transmission network. When a blackout occurs, substations lose their control systems, protection relays stop functioning, and generation units shut down automatically. A black start reverses this cascade by using isolated generation capacity that can operate independently, rebuild local voltage, and progressively reconnect consumers and other generators to restore grid stability.

Power stations equipped for black start capability maintain dedicated equipment and fuel reserves to accomplish this restart. A generator with black start capability must be able to excite its own field coils and produce electricity without external power; older synchronous machines achieve this through permanent magnets or pilot alternators, while modern units may use battery-backed electronics. Hydroelectric plants are preferred black start resources because they can respond quickly and hold their output steady. Gas turbines with stored fuel and coal plants with residual coal reserves can also serve this role, though nuclear units are typically excluded due to their reliance on continuous external power for cooling and control systems.

The restoration sequence

Black start restoration follows a methodical sequence. The first step is to energize one or more critical generation sources and establish a small stable island of the grid around them. Control room operators then gradually synchronize and reconnect transmission lines, bringing other generators online in sequence and restoring load to maintain frequency near 50 or 60 Hz. The process requires real-time coordination between dispatch centers, station operators, and substation technicians. Modern grid codes specify minimum black start capability for designated power plants, and utilities conduct drills to ensure personnel can execute the procedure even when communication systems are partially damaged.

Black start challenges arise when multiple simultaneous failures trigger widespread cascading blackouts, common in storms or after ice accumulation on transmission lines. The restoration speed depends on which generation units survived intact, whether fuel supply routes remain open, and whether cooling water (for thermal plants) is available. In island grids or systems with limited redundancy, black start capability can take hours or even days. Renewable energy sources like wind and solar complicate black start planning because they cannot be controlled to provide the steady voltage and frequency needed during the initial island-building phase.

The term originates from the contrast with normal operation: a power station in normal service receives electricity from the external grid to operate its auxiliary systems, control equipment, and cooling pumps. In a black start scenario, there is no external voltage to reference, so the station must begin literally from darkness. Regulatory agencies and grid operators designate specific plants and plan concrete black start pathways for each region to ensure system resilience. Black start capability is now a contractual requirement for many large generators and is audited as part of grid reliability standards.
