A small, purposeful opening found in objects (e.g. glass panes, metal plates, airplane windows, etc.) to equalise air pressure and prevent condensation and fogging.

A bleed hole is a small, precisely drilled or molded opening that allows air and moisture to flow between separate pressure zones. In laminated or insulated structures like aircraft windows, refrigerated containers, or double-glazed panels, it stops condensation from trapping moisture between sealed layers and equalizes pressure differences that would otherwise crack or warp the component.
The typical bleed hole measures 1 to 3 mm in diameter, though size depends on the application and expected moisture load. In airplane cabin windows, which experience significant temperature swings between the cabin interior and the frigid outside air, bleed holes are positioned in the frame or seal channel between the outer and inner panes. They allow humid cabin air to escape slowly and equalize the pressure gradually as altitude changes. Without them, moisture accumulates between panes and blocks visibility; pressure also builds and can stress the window assembly.
Placement matters critically. The hole must be positioned where moisture will not simply run down inside the structure or re-enter the sealed space. In window frames, bleed holes typically sit in the lowest part of the frame cavity to allow gravity-assisted drainage. In some designs, multiple small holes are spaced around the perimeter rather than one central hole, improving drainage and pressure equalization. The hole is sometimes fitted with a porous membrane or capillary tube to slow the flow rate and prevent rapid pressure dumps that might cause other problems.
Common failure modes
Bleed holes clog easily. Dust, paint residue, silicone sealant, or manufacturing debris lodged in the hole blocks airflow and defeats the design intent. Poorly maintained windows or frames exposed to industrial dust environments see accelerated clogging. Likewise, a bleed hole that is too small or positioned too high will allow condensation to accumulate faster than it drains, especially in cold climates or high-humidity processes. Conversely, an oversized hole allows too-rapid pressure equalization, which can introduce unwanted air and noise into sealed spaces.
The term "bleed" refers to the controlled leakage itself, borrowed from hydraulics and pressure systems where small leaks or drains are described the same way. In practice, the bleed hole is invisible once assembled and only noticed when it fails, producing the fogged windows or internal corrosion that signal its absence or blockage.
