A bracket in marine construction is a short, heavily curved timber or fabricated metal member installed between a vertical surface (like a mast, bulkhead, or frame) and a horizontal one (deck, beam, or stringer) to carry loads in compression and shear. Unlike a knee, which is a naturally curved tree limb shaped by growth, a bracket is purpose-built and more uniform in section. It transfers concentrated loads from deck equipment, mast step forces, or structural joints down into the main hull framework, preventing buckling and distributing stress across a wider area.
Wooden brackets were historically sawn from compass timber (curved grain wood selected for natural strength along the grain) or steam-bent and fitted with bolts and drift pins. Modern brackets are typically welded steel or aluminum fabrications, often with gusset plates extending their reach and load capacity. A typical bracket might measure 18 inches to 4 feet along its longest dimension, depending on the load class and vessel size. The cross-section varies from solid rectangular bar stock on small craft to I-section or tube stock on large commercial hulls.
Brackets are classified by their location and function: deck brackets support the weight of mounted equipment and weather forces; mast brackets transfer rig tension into the hull; frame brackets reinforce the intersection of deck beams with side frames; and web brackets stiffen large flat areas prone to panel buckling. Each type has different attachment details and load orientations. In steel construction, brackets are welded along their full length at both ends; in wood and composite vessels, they may be lag-bolted or through-bolted with washers and backing plates.
Common failure modes and inspection
Corrosion at the welded fillet, particularly where saltwater sits in a crevice, is the primary failure mechanism in steel brackets. Fatigue cracks initiate at stress concentrations where the bracket changes section or at the weld toe. On wooden vessels, rot spreads from the fastening holes where moisture enters, and mechanical failure occurs when the grain splits along the load path. Brackets fastened with through-bolts can work loose if not locked with lock washers or thread-locking compound, introducing play that accelerates fatigue damage.
The term 'bracket' originates from the bent-leg appearance of the component, which resembles a bracketing gesture or the angle-iron support symbol now common in architecture and engineering drawing. In shipyard parlance, a bracket is distinct from a knee (which implies organic curvature) and from a stiffener or stringer (which run the length of a structure rather than bridging two surfaces). On large vessels, hundreds of brackets may be installed, each catalogued in construction drawings with unique numbers and material specifications.
