Branch line: the local feeder route off the main trunk
A branch line is a secondary railroad route that connects to and feeds traffic into a railroad's main line or trunk. Unlike mainlines, which handle long-distance and high-volume throughput, branch lines serve local communities, industries, and regional distribution points. They typically radiate from a junction point on the main line and terminate at a smaller town, port, quarry, or industrial facility. Branch lines were historically essential infrastructure for agricultural regions and resource extraction, carrying grain, livestock, timber, coal, and manufactured goods to distribution hubs where they connected with express freight.
The physical characteristics of a branch line differ markedly from main line construction. Branch lines commonly operated with lighter rail, often 50 to 75 pounds per yard compared to 90 to 130 pounds on trunk routes. Track geometry was more relaxed: curves could be tighter (12 to 15 degree radius rather than 5 degree), grades steeper (up to 4 percent rather than 1 to 2 percent), and ballast less substantial. Signalling was minimal or absent entirely; single track was the norm rather than the exception. These economies of construction and maintenance made branch lines feasible for modest traffic volumes, though they also limited speed, axle load, and the weight of trains that could operate on them.
Branch line operation depended on traffic type and density. Passenger service on branch lines typically consisted of mixed trains (combining freight and a handful of coaches) running two or three times weekly, or dedicated railcars with modest capacity. Freight operations ranged from daily pick-up and delivery of local commodity to seasonal concentrated movements. A branch line serving a single coal mine might handle 20 loaded cars daily for eight months, then minimal traffic during off-season. This variability meant branch lines could not justify the infrastructure investment or operating costs of main lines.
The branch line network expanded rapidly during the 19th and early 20th centuries as railways penetrated agricultural and resource-rich hinterlands. In the United States, branch line mileage peaked in the 1920s; British railways had similarly extensive networks. Decline accelerated after 1950 as road transport improved, agricultural consolidation reduced shipments, and coal lost market share to oil. Closure became systematic: unprofitable branch lines were abandoned wholesale from the 1960s onward. Today, few original branch lines remain active; most surviving ones are heritage railways or specialty freight routes (such as lines serving ports or industrial parks).
The term reflects the tree metaphor of railroad geography: the main line is the trunk, and branch lines are branches extending outward. This terminology, along with distinctions like spur (an even shorter line off a branch) and stub (a line with no onward connection), created a clear hierarchical language for network description. Modern freight railroads maintain few branch lines, concentrating instead on high-capacity trunk corridors; service to outlying locations is typically handled by trucking, with rail used only for major distribution centers.
