A bratticer is a skilled underground worker who constructs and maintains brattices, temporary or semi-permanent partitions built inside mine shafts and roadways to direct air flow and contain dust. The job requires knowledge of ventilation principles, material handling, and safe working practices in confined spaces below ground.
Brattices themselves are barriers made from wood, canvas, metal sheeting, or plastic, installed strategically to separate intake air from return air flows and to isolate working areas during mining operations. A bratticer must understand how air moves through a mine and where blockages or redirects are needed to keep fresh air reaching workers and to push contaminated air and coal dust toward extraction points. This work directly affects worker safety, so precision matters more than speed.
The role calls for familiarity with mining ventilation fans, pressure zones, and air velocity standards. A bratticer reads ventilation plans, measures distances and angles, cuts and fits materials to seams and ribs (mine walls), and secures sections so they remain airtight under the pressure differential created by the fan system. In long-wall mining operations, brattices shift as the working face advances, so a bratticer may spend weeks modifying and relocating barriers to maintain proper circuits.
The work is physically demanding and hazardous. Miners operate in low headroom, poor light, and dusty conditions while handling heavy materials and power tools. Poorly installed brattices can fail under fan pressure, collapse, or allow air to short-circuit around the barrier, rendering the ventilation system ineffective and leaving workers exposed to methane, dust, or other hazards.
Bratticing is a trade learned on the job, typically under supervision, rather than a classroom subject. Experienced brattices understand material behavior, structural limits, and the practical limits of ventilation design as implemented underground. In modern mines, the role is less common than it was in the 20th century, as some operations use permanent concrete or steel structures, but temporary brattices remain essential on many underground projects where flexibility and rapid modification are required.
