A breather is an air passage that connects the crankcase of an internal combustion engine to the atmosphere, allowing pressure and vapor to escape while preventing contaminants from entering. As pistons move up and down, they create pressure oscillations inside the crankcase. Without a vent, pressure builds until seals blow or oil is forced past gaskets. The breather solves this by letting air in and out as needed, keeping crankcase pressure near atmospheric.

Modern breathers are not simple open tubes. Most designs use a separator or baffle that removes oil mist and moisture from the vented gases before they exit. A simple open breather will expel fine oil vapor and water vapor into the air; over time, this costs oil and creates visible exhaust haze, especially when cold. Separator breathers typically contain baffles, mesh, or centrifugal stages that cause oil droplets to coalesce and fall back into the pan. Some engines route breather gases into the intake manifold so vapors are burned rather than released.

Failure modes are straightforward. A blocked breather (from accumulated sludge or ice in cold climates) causes pressure to rise inside the crankcase, forcing oil past the main seal and valve cover gaskets. Conversely, a breather that admits dirty air brings dust and water into the sump, accelerating wear and corrosion. On turbocharged engines, crankcase pressure can become significant if the breather cannot flow enough air, so breather sizing matters; undersized tubes cause the same seal leaks that a blocked breather does.

The term "breather" reflects its function: the crankcase breathes in and out with each engine cycle. In British usage, the part is sometimes called a crankcase ventilator or, on older vehicles, a road draught tube (a simple open pipe that relied on vehicle motion to draw air). Modern emission standards have largely eliminated vented breathers in road vehicles, replacing them with closed crankcase ventilation systems that recirculate gases into the engine. Industrial and marine engines, however, often retain traditional breathers, especially in harsh environments where closed systems are difficult to maintain.
